Do you know what the leading cause of death for women under 34 in Australia is? How about the leading cause of death for men under 44?

It’s suicide. 10 in every 100,000 people successfully kill themselves each year. Many more will make attempts and many, many more than that will consider suicide. That means, statistically speaking, a derby player in Australia will die prematurely due to suicide each year.

That death will radiate trauma through their league and community. The close friends and family they leave behind will bear permanent emotional scars.

It also means someone in your league has, is or will feel suicidal.

Today is R U OK? Day. Help prevent a suicide – reach out and let those around you know you care; let them know they have options. Call, chat or connect online.

If you’re in South Australia and having suicidal thoughts, you can receive free care through the Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) Suicide Prevention Program. Ask your GP for a referral.

You are loved.
